Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)

This module introduces the instructor and overviews the course, course objectives,
and the course agenda.

Module 2 begins to define project management and introduces the Project Management Institute (PMI) and its primary reference, the Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK). This module then describes a project and project management, introduces project constraints (the Iron Triangle), then reviews the project management process, tools, stakeholders (people and team members), responsibilities, and connects with the time management matrix

Module 3 discusses the types of organizations (businesses), the types of projects organizations typically have, and introduces Enterprise Portfolio Management. This module introduces the high-level concepts of business management and project management related to the business. This module then moves on to combining these successfully into Enterprise Portfolio Management.

Module 4 presents the two different key types of projects (predictive and agile), then focuses on the characteristics and life cycles of each type of project. This module then transitions to the mode of predictive projects for the reminder of the course

Module 5 defines a Project Management Information System (PMIS), and then uses a sample project to discuss creating a project, using templates, creating the project charter, and identifying stakeholders.

Module 6 builds the project team. It includes definitions for and ways to build a high performing team, drafting and using a team charter, using working agreements, being servant leaders, and how to run a project kickoff. This module also shows useful templates related to building and managing high performing teams through the
example project.

Module 7 first defines the project schedule and outlines its benefits, then describes the steps for building a schedule. Scheduling tools are showcased using the project course example and the Iron Triangle is used to control schedule.

Module 8 discusses the project budget including key terms and definitions. It describes what a budget is, how to create one, and how to plan for and perform cost management. Tools are used with the example project to show how to build and manage a project budget, and project budget is oriented within the Iron Triangle.

Module 9 is the last part of the planning unit. This module includes project analysis (charter, schedule and budget), obtaining approval before starting the project, and setting a baseline for moving forward. Module 9 also introduces the Project Management Plan (PMP) and the project planning concept of progressive elaboration related to project details and tasks.

Module 10 lays out processes for working the project and executing project plans. This includes completing tasks, updating schedules and costs, managing risks and issues, and communicating with stakeholders. Tools are used with the example project to show how to identify, track and manage risks.

Module 11A focuses on defining both monitoring and controlling. It identifies what should be monitored (7 key items), outlines the four activities of project control, as well as defines the principles that apply to those project controls. The first 3 monitor/ control items are detailed in 11A including: Scope, Schedule, and Budget.

Module 11B focuses on Progress Monitoring/Reporting and Earned Value Management (EVM). This module introduces key monitoring questions, rates, EVM methodology, work package dimensions, and the formation of the performance measurement baseline for Earned Value Analysis. A new scenario discusses concepts
of earned value management and performance measures including baseline costs (over time and time-phased), planned value, earned value, actual costs, and variances. Performance index formulas (cost and schedule performance) as well as completion metrics calculations help monitor, understand, and control project progress.

Module 11C completes the list of items to monitor from 11A. This includes risk (and
the Risk Register), issues (and Monitor Issue Logs), stakeholders, documents (with the
Configuration Management Plan), and finally monitoring the project’s product, service,
or result (including controlling quality and validating scope). Quality terms, definitions,
and tools are introduced for additional monitoring and control processes.

Module 11D completes the Monitor and Control topic with processes to help control change in a project including using a change management plan and performing integrated change control. An example models a typical change request process.

Module 12 gathers quality and completion information from stakeholders (customer and team) to support communication, continuous improvement, and lesson learned data. The Project Summary Report, or Final Report, summarizes the project, references key data and metrics, and demonstrates earned value. Additional closing steps include team performance reviews, documentation closeout, and project celebration.

Module 13 closes out the course, but also introduces and overviews project procurements management including key terms, typical steps, statements of work (SOWs), budgeting, the bid process, contracting, and procurement controls.
